What does my car's serpentine belt do?
A serpentine belt is the belt on your car that drives the accessories. In order to technically be a serpentine belt, it must drive multiple accessories. Things like:
· Power steering pump
· Air conditioning compressor
· Water pump
· Smog pump(this is an emissions control on older cars.
This important belt helps to keep your battery charged and your car cool or from over-heating, among other things. A broken serpentine belt will definitely leave you stranded if it breaks, so have our technicians check the health of yours today!
How Often Should I Change Engine Coolant?
For some vehicles, you’re advised to change the coolant every 30,000 miles. For others, changing the coolant isn’t even on the maintenance schedule. Coolant can deteriorate over time and should be tested to see if it’s still good, as it can be hard to tell just by appearances. Even if testing shows the cooling and antifreeze protection are still adequate, antifreeze can become more acidic over time and lose its rust-inhibiting properties, causing corrosion. Some manufacturers recommend changing the coolant more often on vehicles subjected to “severe service,” such as frequent towing.
How often should I change my car's fluids?
Replacing your vehicle’s fluids regularly will ensure that you aren’t cycling worn-out engine oil through your engine or transmission, which leads to more rapid deterioration of critical components. Engine oil is normally replaced every 3000-6000 miles or roughly 6 month, but consult your owners manual for the manufacturer’s recommendations for your vehicle. Transmission fluid is typically changed every between every 50,000-100,000 miles.
